Vocabulary: "underway" (The Olympics are underway.)


When something is underway, it means it has started, and is happening now.

For example, I am writing this blog post during the Opening Ceremony of the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio, so we can now say:

"The 2016 Summer Olympics are underway."

This means the event has begun and is now in progress.

In fact, the term underway is often used in sports by TV announcers, for example after the opening kickoff in a soccer match, or the opening tip in a basketball game.
