Notice regarding the ongoing coronavirus situation as of April 2020:

To protect everyone's health and safety, new student enrollment is currently limited to online lessons in most cases.

To offset this inconvenience, new online students will receive a 20% discount on their first two months of lessons.

When we say something is second nature to people, it means that thing is easy for them or comes naturally to them without much effort.

Example:

When we were students, math was difficult for me, but it was second nature to my brother. He always got good grades without even trying very hard.

To make up one's mind is to decide or choose something, usually after thinking about it for a while.

Example (at a restaurant):

Bobby: What are you going to get?
Donna: I'm not sure, there are so many things on the menu. I can't make up my mind!

【日記】 The Importance of Thinking in English

This morning in one of my classes a student said something that was a good reminder of why it's important to try to think in English when you're speaking English.

I will use a different, but simliar example here of the type of sentence my student said:

"After dinner, some people stayed for drinks, and some went home. The went home people said they were tired."

In this case, we can see an example of someone thinking something in Japanese first, and then saying it in English after that.

We know this because of the word order:

"The went home people" is in the same order as "kaetta hito" in Japanese.

But the problem is that the natural word order in English is different. It should be:

"The people who went home said they were tired."

This is why it is important to try to form your thoughts in English first. Then, when you speak them aloud, you will probably use more natural word order and expressions.

It isn't always easy, and it takes practice, but with time it will come to you more easily. And the more you practice thinking in English, the more quickly you can improve!

【日記】 Natural Expressions: "be back/get back"

To be back or get back means to return to the place you started, which is usually home, but can also be a workplace, school, or anywhere someone is returning to.

Some examples in phone conversations:

Ophelia: When will you get back from your vacation?
Brent: Actually, I'm already back. I just got back home yesterday.
(Note here that "be back" is used to describe already having returned, but "get back" describes the time of arrival.)

Peggy: May I speak with Juan, please?
Avtar: I'm sorry, he's out right now. He should be back in about 30 minutes? May I take a message?

"Get back" can also describe resuming an action which has been paused or stopped, and in this sense is often used about work or studying:

Oreva: Mm, that coffee was good. I needed that.
Simone: Yeah, but break time's over. Let's get back to work.
(Here, "get back to work" means "return to doing work again.")

The idiom "to hit the books" simply means "to study," often with the nuance of studying hard.

So, for example:

Suzie: I'm going out for dinner and drinks with some friends tonight. Do you want to come?
Keiji: I'd love to, but I can't. I have a big test tomorrow, so I have to hit the books.
--Here, Keiji means that he has to stay home and study hard for his test.

To check something out means to see it, experience it, explore it, or investigate it for yourself. If you want to check out a new restaurant, you'll go and eat there. If your friends tell you to check out a new movie, they are recommending that you go and see it. When one of my students tells me about an interesting news story, I usually check it out by searching for it online.

So, for example:

Sora: Have you been to that new Thai restaurant yet?
Alejandro: No, but I love Thai food. Let's go check it out!
--Here, Alejandro is suggesting they go and eat at the restaurant.

Or:

Hakim: So, I saw the new King Kong movie last night. It was pretty good!
Mei: Oh, yeah? Maybe I'll have to go check it out.
--Here, Mei is saying she'll probaby go see the movie.

We can use the word "just" to make things seem less important have a softer nuance.

For one example, this phone conversation:

Juan: Hey, Sally. What's up?
Sally: Nothing, I was just calling to ask what time you're going to the party.
-- Here, Sally could say "I was callling," but she says "I was just calling" to show that her reason for calling is small or not too important.

Or, in a workplace:

Daniela: Are you okay, Amir? You look exhausted.
Amir: Yeah, I'm fine. I'm just a little tired because I didn't sleep well last night.
-- Amir uses both the expressions "just" and "a little" together here to show that even though he's tired, it's not too big of a problem. And actually, the expressions "just a little" or "just a bit" are used very often in this way.

【日記】 Natural Expressions: "I'm really into jazz."

The expression "to be into (something)" means that you really enjoy it, and are interested in it. In the negative ("not into ____") it means that you are not very interested in that thing.

Some examples:

"I'm really into jazz guitar. Wes Montomery is one of my favorite guitarists."

"I'm usually not really into watching swimming, but I like to watch it in the Olympics."

Notice that when a verb follows "into" in this expression, it takes the -ing form:

"I'm really into cooking."
