It may seem strange, but we generally don't use the verb "present" when we're talking about giving presents. Instead, most of the time we use "give".
So, the following sentence is NOT natural:
"My sister presented me a necklace."
It's much better to say:
"My sister gave me a necklace."
Usually, the verb "present" is only used when giving awards or gifts in formal or ceremonial situations. For example:
"The Prime Minister presented the Emperor's Cup to the Yokozuna."
