Tonight, May 22nd, 2016, there is a blue moon here in Japan. (In some countries, such as the U.S., it's on May 21st.) The more famous definition of a blue moon is the second full moon in a calendar month. But tonight's full moon is a different kind.
According to TimeAndDate.com, there is a second definition of a blue moon, which is "the third full Moon in an astronomical season with 4 full Moons (versus the normal 3)." And that is the kind of blue moon we have tonight.
But just by coincidence, there is another cosmic event happening now, too.
Tonight, Mars is on the opposite side of the Sun from Earth, which according to NASA is called "Mars opposition," and happens once every 26 months.
The expression in English, "once in a blue moon," means "very rarely," and for both a blue moon and Mars opposition to happen on the same night is rare indeed!
