Speaking naturally: "gave" vs. "presented" (2016.03.02)

I hear a lot of my students say things like:

"My family presented me flowers for my birthday."

But in the case of receiving or giving presents, it's actually more natural to use "gave," and not "presented," so...

My family gave me flowers

...is the better way to say this.

"Presented" is used more often for awards and ceremonies, for example:

"Morgan Freeman presented the award for Best Picture at the Academy Awards show." This means that he announced the winner and handed the award to the diredtor and producers when they won it.
