"Leap years" and "leap days" (2016.02.29)
Today is February 29th, that extra day added once every four years to keep our calendar in sync with nature. The 29th of February is called a "leap day," and the quadrennial years like 2016, 2012, 2008, etc., which have the extra day are called "leap years."
The two most notable events which happen every leap year are the Summer Olympics (to be held in Rio in 2016) and the U.S. presidential elections.
Most people know about leap years and leap days, but did you know we have leap seconds, too? According to Like leap days, leap seconds need to be added to our calendars to keep us on track with solar time. According to Wikipedia, since the the leap second system was started in 1972, "26 leap seconds have been inserted, the most recent on June 30, 2015 at 23:59:60."
