Natural Expressions: "just"
We can use the word "just" to make things seem less important have a softer nuance.
For one example, this phone conversation:
Juan: Hey, Sally. What's up?
Sally: Nothing,
I was just calling to ask what time you're going to the party.
-- Here, Sally could say "I was callling," but she says "I was just calling" to show that her reason for calling is small or not too important.
Or, in a workplace:
Daniela: Are you okay, Amir? You look exhausted.
Amir: Yeah, I'm fine.
I'm just a little tired because I didn't sleep well last night.
-- Amir uses both the expressions "just" and "a little" together here to show that even though he's tired, it's not too big of a problem. And actually, the expressions "just a little" or "just a bit" are used very often in this way.
