Vocabulary: "actually"

"Actually" is one of the most useful words in English, and it's one of the top 200 words we use. (Touchstone 2, 2014).

The basic meaning of "actually" is similar to "in fact" - it means something is true.

But there are many uses and nuances of "actually," so let's look at some.

1) Use "actually" to politely correct a mistake, say no, or disagree with someone. Some examples:

Donna: You're from Canada, right?
Bobby: Actually, I'm from America. (Here, "actually" means "no" but it's softer and more polite.)

Carlos: We need to hurry! The movie starts at 7:00!
Janis: It actually starts at 8:00, so we're fine. (Here, Janis is correcting Jerry's mistake in a polite way.)

2) Use "actually" to introduce some new or interesting information. For example:

Grace: I'd love to go to Vietnam someday.
Marty: My cousin actually lives there, so maybe we could stay with him! (Here, Marty is adding some new information that should interest Grace.)

3) Use "actually" to communicate that something is surprising or unexpected. For example:

Hanako: What sports do you like?
Rick: Actually, I really like sumo! (Here, it may be surprising to Hanako that Rick likes sumo because he isn't Japanese.)

Actually, you can use the word "actually" in so many situations that it's a great word to learn to use!
